The College motto “Excellamus” shows a long history of aiming for excellence. We intend to continue this tradition by aiming for excellence through participation.
Cohuna Secondary College services a rural town and the adjacent communities. Cohuna is situated on the Murray Valley Highway and on the banks of the Gunbower Creek, in an area that contains the red gum Gunbower State Forest and the Murray River. The area offers the potential for varied recreational activities and tourism. The community has access to a wide range of sporting facilities and offers a relaxed lifestyle. Cohuna is central to a highly productive irrigation dairying industry. The local community, through the Progress Association, is exploring initiatives to encourage economic growth in the district.
The College has extensive grounds (10 hectares), which provide both active and passive recreational opportunities. The review period has seen the completion of a building refurbishment. This has significantly modernized the appearance of the school and with well over $2m being spent gives a clear message that the school is a vibrant, active place and that it is here to stay.
The eight Key Learning Areas of English, Mathematics, Science, Technology, Language other than English (LOTE – French), Health and Physical Education, The Arts, Studies of Society and Environment are emphasised in the comprehensive curriculum offered by the College in Year 7 to 12. Tuition through Distance Education supports the programs offered at the school.
The provision of an extensive range of VCE units, including units offered out of normal school hours, ensures students’ access to tertiary studies and diverse career opportunities. Currently the College is investigating the implementation of VCAL as another pathway for students.
Continuing success in both formal studies, sport and extra curricular activities exemplifies the College’s emphasis on “quality of life” education. Theatre Restaurant style musical productions, the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge, involvement in the Victorian Youth Development Program and the growth of music and our Concert Band are all examples of the opportunities provided for our students. Guest speakers working on both curriculum and personal growth, programs such as the Solar Boat Challenge through having an Engineer in School, the Australian Stock Exchange game and now Lord of the Weeds all add to the rich education tapestry for our students.
Our students enjoy access to extensive and varied camps and excursions program, a public speaking forum, debating, work experience, special education programs, sport, VET courses and School Based New Apprenticeships.
Our College aims to encourage each student to develop positive behaviour based on co-operation, mutual respect and tolerance amongst students, with students taking responsibility for their own actions.
